Being laid off from a job is one of the most traumatic events a Worker will experience in life" (DOL, 2024). It feels like the assassination of a career to a worker impacted by it. While the primary focus is often about the company and need for financial change and/or reasons for the reduction-in-force (RIF), we must not forget about the Worker that is experiencing trauma that almost feels criminal. Yes, we are familiar with reality shows of fake drama (i.e., NCIS, Fire Country, Tracker, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds), but for the Workers it becomes a real-time dilemma. This platform looks at the potential experiences of the people assets adversely impacted by a layoff.
ALL workers feel a sense of danger and a myriad of emotions that disrupt their natural tendencies to behave or perform at their best after the official announcement of a layoff. Studies show that we have two minds: one that thinks and one that feels (Goleman, 2024). For example, SHOCK is a common feeling that prompts physical, mental and emotional outcomes. It may be followed by ANGER, a feeling of workplace betrayal especially with the loss of income. GRIEF is another emotion that is triggers feeling of sadness or despair. And, FEAR prompts the feeling of being unsure if they are next or worse, that they are unemployable due to lack of skills or immediate connections in order to get that next job. More importantly, it feels like the assassination of a career and these feelings just don't go away, they merely go underground and can cause emotional hi-jacks.
The following short story episodes are hypothetical vignettes and do not depict any actual person, entity, or event. They include workplace potentials and the Science of Emotional Intelligence along with the Art of Scripture to demonstrate perseverance while mitigating against emotional hijacks.
